Central Landfill NOW Accepts Your Media Storage Devices
(CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, floppy disks )
(Woodland, CA) – First of all, what are media storage devices? It is a relatively new waste stream which includes all the spent supplies and obsolete accessories associated with electronic waste. This waste includes CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes and floppy disks/diskettes.
Yolo County once again adds another program that helps reduce waste from landfills and increases recycling and diversion efforts. Yolo County residents now have the opportunity to recycle VHS tapes, cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks/diskettes at the Yolo County Central Landfill. The landfill is accepting them for free drop-off everyday.
Why should I recycle these? Environmentally, it keeps the products from being landfilled.
Recycling keeps electronic waste, some of which contains hazardous material, out of the landfills. As we move farther into the information age, the volume of obsolete computer equipment and supplies is becoming greater and what to do with it is an even bigger problem. The best solution for recycling these materials has been to refer residents and businesses to greendisk.com. This shipping method is still a viable option, however, the Division of Integrated Waste Management has now partnered with CEAR (California Electronic Asset Recovery) to provide the recycling of the devices locally here at the landfill. “On behalf of CEAR, we are pleased to assist the County of Yolo with increasing their recycling diversion rate and by providing their residents with a responsible way to get rid of the growing electronic accessories waste stream. As reuse is the essence of recycling, all of the material in the disks, tapes etc. will be used to make new products.” Kristin DiLallo Sherrill, Business Development Manager
The landfill is open 7 days a week: M – S, 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Materials that are accepted daily for recycling are: E-Waste: computers, and components, TVs, phones and other electronics, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, latex paint, and motor oil and filters. Now the landfill accepts CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes and floppy disks/diskettes. The landfill also accepts bottles, cans, rigid plastic, cardboard and mixed paper daily.
The Yolo County Department of Planning & Public Works, Division of Integrated Waste Management sponsors household hazardous waste events monthly. The next HHW drop-off days are scheduled for February 5 & 6.
